Golf is a sport that has traditionally been dominated by white men, both on and off the course. But in recent years, a new league called LIV Golf has emerged, challenging the status quo and bringing more diversity and innovation to the game.
LIV Golf is a breakaway series funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which offers players more freedom, higher prize money and a team-based format. LIV Golf has also attracted some of the biggest names in golf, such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, who have left the PGA Tour to join the new venture.
But what does this mean for Black entrepreneurs and creatives who are passionate about golf? Well, it means that there are more opportunities to get involved in the sport, whether it’s through fashion, footwear, media or lifestyle. Here are some examples of how Black entrepreneurs and creatives are changing golf and making their mark on the industry.
Steele is a media personality and host of the YouTube series Range Talk with Callaway Golf, where he interviews celebrities and athletes who love golf. He also works with brands like Trap Golf, Five Iron Golf and Nike Golf to promote the sport to a wider audience. Steele started his own media company after posting a viral video on Instagram where he declared himself as “one of the coolest people playing golf right now” and educated newcomers on golf’s unspoken rules.
Slade is an actor, rapper and YouTube’s Sneaker Unboxing King. He provides insights into new releases from Jordan, Nike, adidas and others, and has become a voice in golf with the growing influence of sneaker culture. He speaks to the potential of brands like Jordan to grow the game and attract more young and diverse fans. He also showcases his own golf skills and style on his Instagram account.
Tiger Hood is the street name of Patrick Barr, a photographer and urban golfer who plays with milk cartons instead of balls in New York City. He has gained a cult following for his unconventional approach to golf, which he sees as a form of art and expression. He has been featured in documentaries, magazines and podcasts, and has collaborated with brands like Nike Golf and Vice Golf. He also sells his own merchandise, such as hats, shirts and prints.
Ajanaku is a former college golfer who founded Eastside Golf, a lifestyle brand that celebrates Black culture and golf. He designs his own clothing and accessories, which feature references to hip-hop, basketball and social justice. He also runs events and clinics to introduce golf to inner-city youth and inspire them to pursue their dreams.
These are just some of the examples of how Black entrepreneurs and creatives are changing golf and creating opportunities for themselves and others. LIV Golf is one of the catalysts for this change, as it offers a new platform and perspective for the sport.
